EH4MH – Introduction to Mental Health training delivered by Young Devon

Who is this training for? For staff working in education, as well as professionals working in localities in key roles supporting children and young people such as childrens’ social care professionals. The aim of the training is to support staff who wish to improve their knowledge and confidence in supporting children and young people’s emotional health and wellbeing.

The platform for this training has been redesigned to make it accessible in the current response to Covid 19. This is a blended training session consisting of video learning, live interactive workshops, and digital training notes. The training covers:-

• A framework for thinking about mental health
• Information about adolescent development and mental health
• Information about risk and resilience factors
• How you can help – supporting resilience
• Signposting young people to local specialist services

The training sessions will be split into 3 sessions (as detailed below)
Session 1 – A recorded introduction, 1.5 hours. Alongside this is a digital package of further information and notes from Kate’s presentation. Please ensure you have familiarised yourself with this at least 24hrs prior to the live workshops. Please note: This session needs to be completed in your own time before Sessions 2 and 3.

Sesssion 2 – Live Workshop
This is a practical and interactive session asking school staff to consider themselves, their practice and their own setting. Each workshop lasts approximately an hour and a half.

10.45 hrs
• Introductions and reflections on session 1, chance to share understanding and seek clarification
• Greater confidence to talk about mental health
• Tools to support those conversations
• Information and knowledge about emotional resilience

30 minute lunch break with actions

Session 3 – Live Workshop
Another practical and interactive session – as above.

12.45 hrs
• Insights into risk, attachment and trauma
• understanding of positive psychology and resilience

The course facilitator is Kate Sandel – a trainer with a long and varied track record, supporting staff from many settings to understand more about the emotional lives of young people. Kate helped to develop this training with Young Minds several years ago and led the national Train the Trainer program. She is passionate about highlighting people’s strengths and assets, and has recently completed a certificate in Positive Psychology from Penn University.
