Children and young people with speech, language and communication needs are a complex and diverse group that have intersecting needs originating from neurodevelopmental language disorders, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), socio-economic factors and/or environmental factors affecting the development of language and social communication (social cognition). They face complex challenges arising from their vulnerability including, for example, academic failure, child exploitation, drug and gang culture, social isolation and poor mental health.
