Youth voice opportunities – July 2022

Devon Youth Council exists to get the voice of young people heard and to make a positive change. We’re continuing to grow and develop our youth council, and there are lots of opportunities coming up that we’d love to have you involved in!

This month there are opportunities to speak up on, among other things, transport, health services and your ‘Wish for Devon’.

Have your say on Child Friendly Devon

Devon County Council are committed to making Devon the best place to grow up in. To help them achieve this they are asking children, young people and their families to share what their ‘wish for Devon’ would be. You can give your views any way you like, you can send in photos, drawings, digital art, poetry, stories, even just writing a letter with your hopes for Devon. To find out more visit A wish for Devon – Strategic Plan Any feedback that is given will help shape both the visual branding of a Child Friendly Devon but also the content of what decision makers will focus on. This is your chance to say what you and your friends need and want for your local area. The deadline to submit your ideas is Friday 29 July.

Help give others a voice by running a local Focus Group

The UK Youth Parliament will be out and about this month running small focus groups in their local area on some of the topic issues from the Make Your Mark survey. Back in March young people in Devon voted ‘Mental Health’, ‘Environment’ and ‘Jobs, Money & Homes’ and the most important issues for them. We want to find out more about these issues. Could you help by getting a small group of 4-8 young people together to discuss one of the these themes? The UK Youth Parliament Team have created the questions to discuss as well as feedback form for you to share your feedback. To receive these resources email ukyouthparliament@devon.gov.uk. If you are still in school, maybe ask your school council to sit down and discuss one of the themes, or even use a lunchbreak to talk it through with friends. We will also be launching some brief surveys to help capture individuals views, so keep an eye out on social media.

Speak up on Transport

There is the opportunity to join a discussion about how Transport can tackle loneliness in Devon. This will be an online meeting with decision makers from the transport team in Devon County Council who want to hear young people’s views about transport and how it can affect feelings of loneliness and isolation. The meeting will take place on Tuesday 19 July at 5pm. If you would like to join the discussion, please let us know by emailing ukyouthparliament@devon.gov.uk and we can send you the meeting link.

Improve Health Services by supporting website design

We’re looking to set up a small group of young people to help design a new health website for young people. We need no more than 8 young people to be part of the group which will meeting around four times over the next year. Each meeting will explore a different element of website design from the content to reviewing visits to the site. If you are interested please get in touch.

Take part in interviewing potential Safeguarding & Specialist Nurses

There is the opportunity for two or three young people to interview candidates for some new roles in Public Health Nursing. You would be involved in asking questions to candidates and then scoring them based on how suitable for the job you think they would be. The dates for the interviews would be on Thursday 11 and Monday 15 August. Your thoughts & opinions will affect who gets the job and as an added incentive you will receive a gift voucher as a thank you. If you are interested, please get in touch.

Make a difference and promote youth voice

You can make a difference for more young people by letting people know about the Youth Council & all the opportunities mentioned above. Make sure you follow us on social media to keep up to date with opportunities to have your say and get your voice heard and share these opportunities with friends. We are committed to getting the voice of young people heard and need your help to get your friends involved and speaking up on the issues that are important to them.
